Baking: New Goal
I really want to work on being more hospitable. I have always wanted to be good at bringing over baked goods when someone has a baby, loses someone, or invites us for dinner. However, I am always crunched for time. It seems that I never have time to bake. I really want to make it a goal to bake at least once a week and freeze the items until I need them for a further date. Well see...

Baby: To Swaddle or Not To Swaddle
One night the hubs and I were looking at baby things online. I showed him my favorite swaddling blankets on aden + anais. His perplex look explained it all. "What is swaddling?" Why these?" Well I love these blankets because they are made of muslin. Muslin is a material that is breathable and allows the baby to feel warm, but not overheat. They are also very diverse because you can use them as burp rags, stroller covers, or breast feeding covers. So here are some of my favorites:
I also love their sleeping bags...
So after staring at the screen, hubs says "No Really, What is swaddling?" Here is what we found:
Here is why we will:

MMMMMMM!!! We are baking up a storm at the Hurley household. Tonight's recipe is Banana Bundt Cake. I added White Chocolate Chips for extra yumminess. I also use Whole Wheat flour instead of white unbleached.

Yummy: Homemade Apple Sauce
We have 5 apple trees on the property where we live. We have Granny Smith, Pink Lady, Gala, and a sort of Fuji tasting apple. There were so many this year, so I froze several bags. I read that you should freeze them after you peel them and chop them. But I just froze them whole. Then I use the sink faucet and with cold water would rinse the apple so it wasn't so frozen. Then I peel the apple. I got our knife wet and cut the apple around the core. Four giant pieces per apple. I put them all in the crock pot with about 1/2 cup water, 1/4 cup raw sugar and about 4-5 tablespoons of cinnamon. I mix the cinnamon and sugar together first. I left it on high for about 3 hours and then on low for about 10. Although when it is done it looks a little uninviting...it tastes like pie filling. So yummy and delicious and relatively healthy!!

Birth Plan: Part 2
Here is some information that I found that supports our water birth choice. I really enjoy this website and this topic particularly struck a cord with me. Just for you SjD!!

The Benefits of a Water Birth to Mom & Baby
Posted Monday 28 Mar 2011 by Maria Rainier
If you’re considering a natural pregnancy and birth, you’ll probably want to add home or birth center water birth to the list of topics you and your husband are studying. While this process of giving birth in a carefully controlled water tub has been slow to catch on in hospitals, more of them are offering this service to expectant mothers than ever before. This is largely because of the overwhelming benefits of a water birth for both mother and baby, which are listed below.
Pain Management
The decrease in delivery pain provided by a water birth is second only to a hospital’s epidural anesthesia, which means that it’s extremely effective in reducing mom’s pain. Having a water birth is a better way to control pain than using any type of pain medication (except the epidural), and it’s undoubtedly the healthiest way. So if you’re hesitant to use drugs or anesthesia during your birth process, rest assured that you can avoid these potential dangers while keeping your pain under control naturally.
Avoidance of Epidural Anesthesia
Many moms-to-be decide against epidural anesthesia for a variety of reasons. A lot of those reasons have to do with the negative effects of an epidural on both mother and baby, so having a home or birth center water birth will enable you to avoid these effects entirely. Here are some of the complications linked to epidurals, all of which are less likely to occur in water births:
- Decreased uterine function and longer births
- Increased rate of operative deliveries (c-sections and use of forceps or vacuum extraction)
- Unsuccessful positioning of the fetus for normal birth, most likely caused by the epidural’s tendency to impede the mother’s pelvic muscle function
- Mother’s hypotension (low blood pressure), which can cause a dangerously low fetal heart rate
- Mother’s fever during labor, which often results in antibiotic treatment and longer hospitalization for the baby
- Mother’s inability to move or walk during labor, feel contractions, know when to push, and help the birth process along by using pelvic muscles.
Decreased Potential for Tearing
Women who give birth in the water have fewer tears occurring during the birthing process. This results in fewer stitches and a faster recovery time after delivery. The decrease in tears is most likely due to the mother’s ability to relax more successfully in the water.
Better Mobility & Relaxation for Mom
Even when a new mom has been pregnant for what seems like an endless number of months and has dealt with the difficulty of moving her larger body through space, water has the effect of helping her feel mobile, comfortable, and even graceful again. That “weightless” feeling that results from being partially submerged in water helps her move throughout labor and delivery, enabling her to provide more assistance to the baby moving through the birth canal. The relaxing effects of a warm bath also help mom to feel less pain and stress, making the birthing process more comfortable for her and the baby.
Faster Birth with Fewer Complications
In the end, having a water birth means fewer complications (like c-sections and other drastic interventions) and tends to speed up the delivery process naturally. Because mom can control her muscles and respond to her contractions without feeling as much pain as she would with a “dry” birth, she can provide more pushing force to help the baby emerge faster. A shorter labor and delivery period can mean less pain, stress, and recovery time – what mom wouldn’t want that?
If you’re considering a water birth, your next step is to find a local birth center that provides this service or a midwife and doula who can come to your home, then find out about the processes and policies involved for each option. This can help you decide for certain whether or not you’re interested in having a water birth.
Exercise: With the baby
I'm very excited that I can still run! Lately it has only been once or twice a week, due to my new lovely job in the classroom. I need to continue with my yoga, but I am happy that I can still burn calories running. I want to continue my tradition of running on Thanksgiving and although I will be slow I am determined to run the WHOLE THING! I won't be running at my normal quick pace, but I just want to be able to run. Today I practice and was able to run 4 miles in 43 minutes. Which is GREAT!!
Stay tuned for how I did at the Turkey Trot in Roseville this year!!

Baking: Baked Apple Pie Donuts
My love for pinterest has grown immensely...especially because of the baby and my love for baking. I found a wonderful recipe for baked apple pie donuts (thank you Amy Clark). I froze all my apples this year in hopes of making delicious apple treats this holiday season. So tonight's baked treat will soon be here...yummo!
Here is the recipe, but be sure to visit Momadvice for more great tips and recipes.

Birth Plan Update
In case you haven't heard...which you probably haven't...Steven, baby and I are having a home birth! And it is in a tub! Yahoo! So far I've had a majority of support and love, but I will be the first to admit it is a different. Many people have told me the dangers of having a baby. Ahh! Yes, the dangers...how many years have women been having babies? Sorry please excuse my passive aggresivity as this post progresses. Prior to really reading and researching about homebirth I have always wanted to have the freedom to give birth the way that my body feels the need to. I have always REFUSED to lay on my back to make it easier on the doctor. Sorry doc...I'm pushing something out of my hoo-haw, what are you doing. Again I apologize. Okay...so the more research we did, the more we found that having a homebirth is safe, if not safer than having a birth in a hospital. I am working with wonderful midwives that have me on quite a few supplements and diet that will be helpful in insuring a safe homebirth.
Here is my regime:
2 Prenatals
2 Cranberry
2 PB8
1 Dandelion Root (1/2 for every month I'm pregnant)
1 Fish Oil
1 Folic Acid
1 Magnesium
1 Calcium
Grand total:11 (soon to be 12 as I up my dosage of 1 Dandelion to 2)
I also take 1 concentrated cup of Mother's Tea
2 liters of water
80-100 grams of Protein a day (this is where I struggle the most)
And a focus on whole foods (excuse my liking for hotdogs and sausages, I choose Nitrate free)
Anyway I will continue to share more about my love for wanting a homebirth as time progresses. But until then enjoy the movies: The Business of Being Born and Pregnant in America.

Baby Post
So excited for our new little addition to join us! Two more days until 16 weeks and a lovely pic of the bump. Lately I've been
singing the ABC's and the months of the year song.
Also, the Sesame Street song has been in my head for about 4 WEEKS!! But it soothes me, oddly enough.
I don't fit into anything except leggings and jeans! I need to start getting creative, since jeans day is Friday!
I've stopped shopping/browsing online for baby things since most things require a gender to purchase (i.e., bedding, clothing, etc)
I'm beginning to enjoy some protein, hotdogs and sausages, even though they are really not the best. I gotta get my protein from somewhere.
My favorite foods are fruit, veggies, and cereal!!!
My do-not-get-near-me foods
Chicken (still)
Hamburger
Whey Protein
