Book Review: Crazy, Sexy Diet

YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!!
No seriously you must!!!

Kris Carr is phenomenal!
This book is full of great information, colorful pictures, great recipes, and encouraging words.
It made wanting a colonic fun?! Is that possible.
Kris' has a great story. She found out she had cancer and made a 360 degree turn with her eating and was able to stop her cancer growth.

Her book is solely based on a vegan/vegetarian diet.
I keep running into this concept.
To eat meat or not.
If I raised my own cattle, I would definitely eat meat.
But she is right when she discusses its issues with digestion.
My favorite thing about her is that she has a 60/40 encouragement of this diet.
A diet isn't really a quick fix, its a lifestyle change. I like this 60/40 because it allows you some freedom, but she also mentions working toward having an 80/20 goal of this diet.
Looking at my diet, I will say that I am very close with this, maybe 70% following and 30% not.
I've gotta work on eliminating carbs out of the diet. But they are cheap and easy.

I definitely give this book 6 out of 5 hearts. Get it now!!

I've also read the book above and it is filled with lots of quality recipes I am very excited to try out!!

How are you a clean eater?

Walnut Chickpea Burgers

We have this lovely little place near Sacramento called the Sunflower Drive-In.
It is home to the most fabulous Nut burger.
Even before I knew what a vegan really was, I indulged in this vegan/vegetarian place.
The menu is full of natural goodies, like Falafel and Nut Tacos.

I've always experimented with different ways to make nut burgers.

This is one of the simple ways.

1/2 bag of soaked chickpeas
1 cup ground walnuts
3 T of flax seed
3 T of water

Put chickpeas in food processor and blend until still chunky.
Combine ground walnuts, chickpeas, flax seed and water.
Add any flavorings (I use garlic powder).
Form into patties.
Cook in a pan and Enjoy.

These burgers are messy and tend to fall apart. I have also used this  as a mixture for tacos and added the taco seasoning to it.

Yummy!

Book Review: Hungry for Change

There are good books and great books. And this was definitely a great book. More of a compilation.
The authors do a great jobbifbincluding testimony from a plethora of well known and intelligent people.
This book was written because a family member of the author was in serious health crisis.
Through diet change, he was able to reverse his condition.

Much like the documentary, Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead, this book shows you just how important your diet is.

Eating clean isn't always the easiest thing to do. It can be expensive.

But not as expensive as a heart transplant. Or being diagnosed with diabetes.

I think we love in a world that favors instant gratification and false advertising.

You may think something is good, but really the verdict is still not conclusive, think of the whole debate with artificial sweeteners versus sugar.

I've really reevaluated at my diet and really tried to eliminate the added sugar. No sugar in my tea. But you know how that goes...then I begin craving cookies.
So here's to a new beginning :)
NO SUGAR FOR ME!!

I give this book 5 out of 5 hearts.
It was a great read. I would love to watch the documentary.

Have you watched the documentary? Do you have a sweet tooth?

Juicing Dos and Don'ts

I love juicing!!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

It's refreshing, delicious, and healthy.

But not always...

Here are some dos and don'ts that I've learned about juicing:

1. Always have an apple around. Apples make everything much more sweeter. It makes those hard to drink green juices much more tolerable.
2. Cuke it up. Adding a cucumber can add more volume to your juice while also providing some beauty to your skin.
3. Kale and Spinach-buy a bunch: both of these greens don't produce much juice. So you really need a lot in order to get a lot. A bunch of kale will typically produce a little less than 2 ounces, but its very concentrated.

4. Beware of the Beet: Beets are amazing for you. Their juices wonderful for your body. Hubby used them as pre-workout drink and could definitely feel a difference. However, I did not have the same experience. Having too many beets too soon can cause vomiting. Be very careful! At most use one beet a week and gradually add more. It's great for your blood. But it also makes your pee red!!
5. Enjoy a 1 to 3 ratio of fruits of veggies. You want to make sure that you aren't using too many fruits in your juices. This ratio is recommended for optimal juice making, but we all know how delicious pinapple, orange, mango juice sounds, but remember it is full of sugar. And because juicing eliminates fiber, the sugar is absorbed immediately into your system.

And above all...ENJOY!!
Have fun and try new things out. You may find your new favorite combo!!

Book Review: Food Rules

I'm giving it 5 out of 5 hearts!!

This book was wonderful!! 68 rules that should have been taught to everyone. It's a quick book, I think an edited version of the book In Defense of Food. Michael Pollan does a great job of making these rules practical, simple, and funny.

I am now very interested in reading more books by Pollan. He is straight to the point and has rules that are so simple they made me feel dumb for having not followed them.

I give this book a 5 hearts out of 5 hearts.

Book Review: Real Food

So this book freaking rocked my socks!!
It changed my mentality so much.

MY EYES HAVE BEEN OPENED!!

I had no idea that high protein diets were not healthy for you.
Sure you lose weight but is it "HEALTHY"?!

There is so much information that I learned from this book.

I want to share a little bit of it. I'm just gonna write her quotes and explain after.

So I'm giving you some of the gold nuggets I found helpful!!

"The simple truth is that there are no vegan societies."
Planck observes her findings about different societies, and there is no culture that is soley vegan.

INTERESTING?!!!

"High cholesterol and heart disease are rare in cultures wehre people eat colesterol foods."

Lauric acid in breastmilk is critical for baby's immunity

"Lactoferrin from human milk is patented for killing E. coli in meat packing industry."

"Cholesterol is not the villain, the villain is what man does to his cattle and milk."

"Grains give cows and acid stomach," which can promote E. coli.

"[Chickens] if the flock is know to be infected, the eggs go to the 'breakers' market rather than being sold whole. Breakers are pasteurized and made into liquid egg products for restaurants."

"Chicken breast is bleached with chlorine."

"Without fat, digestion is impossible."

"Too much Omega-6 is a BAD thing."

"Omega 6 and Omega 3 should be at an optimal 1:1 ratio"

There is seriously so much more that was in my notes and in the book.

It was fascinating realizing that what we are told is NOT true.

Its actually very, very disappointing. You would think that America with all our resources, would be able to provide healthy choices.

Its just a HUGE corruption and too many people are making money of the unhealthy state of others.

Okay...now I've gotten too hippy on you all.

I really really recommend this book!!

I'm giving it the 6 out of 5 stars because it was BRILLIANT!!

I'm also hoping to read her book on feeding babies.

Have you read Real Food? Curious about eating fat? Let me know!!!

Organic is not enough

Just wanted to share what I've been reading...

What I'm Loving: Cream Top Yogurt

I have been thoroughly enjoying my cream top yogurt in the morning with my homemade granola.

These brands are soooo delicious!!

I've tried
Wallaby Vanilla Bean which has a yummy vanilla syrup on the bottom.
Dreaming Cow's Vanilla Agave is much more subtle. The Honey Pear is a sweet treat too.
I've only tried Kalona's Vanilla, but it was scrumptious.

As you can tell I like vanilla. Its easy to add granola too.

Have you tried any of these?

I'm sure it seems odd. If you have been a reader of this blog you will see that I am reading and very interested into health and fitness.

I'm still eating clean, but what I am really wanting to do is eat responsibly.
There is so much mistreatment done to our cows and animals (which is why I was contemplating vegan).
I think there are great benefits in eating meat, but our food is severely mishandled.

"You need fat to burn fat" and this is just the right treat to enjoy!!!
