Motivational Monday

Happy Birthday Martin Luther King!

Don't you find it funny when one thing after another happens and reminds you to change?!

When I found this quote below I wanted to share how this message of selflessness has been on my mind often.

What am I doing for others?

I truly believe in community and I think MLK did too. I look at this quote through a Christian perspective, probably similar to the author of this quote, and know how we were created to be a part of something greater.

Community has proven to help support, thrive, and grow causes of all sorts. Changes don't occur alone, but with support.

And in those moments of frustration and setbacks, we can't dwell on what could have been. We must have hope, "infinite hope," as MLK says.
There have been countless times where I have metaphorically thrown myself on the ground and acted like a child, when something doesn't go my way. But I'm reminded of the hope of Christ, that all will work out, not as I have planned but as He has. Having hope I believe is difficult. We are so trained to see and believe, to expect results. I guess thats just part of having Faith in someone bigger, knowing you don't have to be perfect, knowing that you are forgiven.

This week I'm going to focus on doing more for others, to listen and not be so quick to speak.

Reason for a Name Change

I've had this little old blog now for 7 years and I thought it was time for a name change. Hurley Love was just not well thought out. I didn't have a plan for where I wanted this blog to go. It was mostly just an online diary that help me keep track of wedding planning. But now that I have taken blogging more serious, I have found what I am interested in blogging about: family, fitness, and faith.

I settled on Mommyhood and Marathons, partially because I love alliterations. I loved the word mommyhood and feels like that describes the phase I'm in. Despite the want to be a mother, I would much rather be a mommy. That word has so much youth and innocence in it. I feel such a raw emotion when I hear the word 'mommy.' I was so thrilled when Lil first said mom, but I cannot wait for her to utter mommy. A word that is used for endearment, love, in moments of joy and pain. Maybe mother is too old fashioned for me, but there is a distinct difference between the word mother and mommy, at least for me. So I arrived on that as part of the title.

And despite the fact that I haven't completed an official marathon, I have 3 halfs under my belt and have finally come to a place where I wanted to try to train for a marathon. Maybe not this month, or the next, but sometime. My crazy obsession with fitness really began when I found a love for running. But after having Lil, I wanted my body to reflect my new phase of mommyhood. I wanted to be able to run and play with my kids. I wanted to be strong and a good role model of health.

So here there is how I arrived at the new name. I believe that it will bring great inspirations and allow me to better represent what this blog is about: family, faith, and fitness.

How did you arrive at your blog name? Did you think about it?

Book Review: Help, Thanks, Wow

I SERIOUSLY love Anne Lamott! She is a talented writer. I love that she holds nothing back. I love too how personal and transparent her books are. Even though she is a Christian, she shares it in a non offensive way and validates everyone, especially in this book.

She focuses on three types of prayer. The 'Help,' The 'Thanks,' and The 'Wow' prayer. Even though many of us use more than one word when we are praying or our memories of prayer are long and lengthy, they can usually be boiled down into these three categories.

This short book is full of laughter, joy, and happiness. It is such a wonderful and refreshing read. I really love the chapter on Thanks and Wow because not often am I expressing those to God. I often find myself in the HELP category, always running to Him when I am in need (also I kinda love that Anne refers to God a 'she').

Great read and you'll be through it in no time.

6 hearts for this beaut!!

Have you read an Anne Lamott book? What are your thoughts on prayer?

How Running Has Made Me a Better Person

For My Fellow Runners
________________________________________

I'd never thought I could run a mile, let alone 13 of them.

But each day, I strap on my shoes and head out.

Some days I run hard.

Others I need to walk.

Sometimes I bring water, but usually not.

Running for me is therapy.

To be able to run is such a gift (although many would say a curse :)

Running has made me a better person.

Each mile I sort through my angst, my pain, and anger.

I relive each memory, conversation, and dream.

I think of how I can be a better person, mom, wife, Christian.

Each mile I run, I pray for those who are hurting, lost, and rejoicing.

I thank God for what I'm blessed with.

When I run, I run to be a better person.

Why do you run?

She Reads Truth: 1 Year Anniversary

I stumbled upon this last summer in July. She Reads Truth is an online community of women that share their thoughts and encourage one another in their faith.

YouVersion is an app that has all the She Reads Truth plans, but you can also use the You Version website, the She Reads Truth website, or sign up for their newsletter.

I've really treasured this study.
I think my favorite has been Proverbs but its so hard to tell.
They have all be faith changing.

Prior to finding SRT, my bible really just collected dust.
I wanted to be in a study, I wanted to be challenged.
But with every goal, you need accountability to get there.
And that was something missing.

I have fallen more in love with Christ this past year.
I've become more patient and wise.

And I know I'm still a work in progress.

There has definitely been a change in how I approach situations in my life.
I have been reminded constantly how great God's love is for me and humanity.

Despite all the tragedy our country has seen this year, God is so faithful and his grace has been revealed time and time again.

I am so grateful for these women who participate in this community and those who have listened to the calling to pursue writing and investing in She Reads Truth!!

You've just gotta check them out!!

Happy First birthday She Reads Truth!!

My heart hurts for Boston and for running today.

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”
― Fred Rogers

I've heard quotes similar to this. I just don't have any words, but have found comfort in others during difficult times like these.

"The shadow proves the sunshine
The shadow proves the sunshine"
--Switchfoot

"Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always." (Psalm 105:4 NIV)
